President's Comments
Dear TRLA Landowers,
I need to apologize to you, my fellow landowners, for not utilizing "this corner" of the website on a routine basis to increase communication with each of you. Now that I see the sunset of my two terms as a Director, I feel the need to inform you in what areas the Association is on solid ground and those areas which could be on thin ice. These “President’s Comments” come from serving you for six years.
Solid Ground:
Financially, we were broke six years ago. We had a non-functioning grader, equipment that had spotty maintenance at best, and little to no gravel spread in quite awhile. Thanks to the financial expertise of David Skinner, we were back on track within a year. Yes, it did require raising the dues but we all bit that bullet. The Board wase frugal and determined. With its dedication and hard work and a dedicated group of volunteers, we are now in great shape. Now we have money in the bank. That doesn’t mean the economic times are not tough, but we are prepared to weather the storm.
Legally, we were in a mess in 2004. Slowly but surely the lawsuits were settled. The obsolete, ambiguous governing documents (Bylaws and Covenants) that plalyed a roll in the lawsuits were corrected. We now have Amended and Restated Bylaws and Codes, Covenants, and Restrictions. The Associationis on solid legal ground and legal costs have diminished substantially.
The TCC Ranch House and Bath House have been restored and refurbished. The “ravages of time” have been curbed with the 2000+ hours of volunteer time, reducing the cost of bringing the Community Center back from the brink of destruction.
Much of the 38 miles of side roads has been regraveled for the first time and parts of them reconstructed where necessary. It is a constant battle with “Mother Nature” as she tries to reclaim them for herself through torrential downpours and erosion. Unplugging culverts, replacing undersized culverts, and putting in new ones where there were none have helped to make her reclamation efforts more difficult.
Of the the few current covenant violations, the impacted landowners are aware of them and working with the Board to resolve them.
Thin Ice:
The vision of TRLA is to protect and enhance the values and enjoyment of Timberlake Ranch and to foster community spirit and stewardship of the environment.
A living community is open to changing the way things are done, sees and acts upon challenges and opportunities, and dares to dream with volunteers. A stagnated community seeks status quo, sees only problems and dangers with consequent nightmares, and expects someone else to do the work.
If landowners do not step forward to serve on the Board or as volunteers with a perspective on the future that protects and enhances the values and enjoyment of Timberlake, there will be few, if any, positive outcomes. This only continues the past. If we don’t foster community spirit and stewardship, there will be a long and protracted death for Timberlake. If we treat visitors to our area and fellow landowenrs with unkind words and lack of civility, no one will want to move here as word spreads outward like the ripples of water when a stone is tossed into it.
Property will not sell. Land values will decrease because of attitude, not solely economics. Landowners will not feel compelled to pay association dues and the trickledown effect will be less maintenance, less gravel, less everything. We will be back where we were seven years ago. History teaches us that it repeats itself unless we learn from it.
It has been a privilege to serve you. It has been a gift to work with dedicated and hard working fellow Board members and volunteers who kept their eye on the present and into the future. It has been rewarding and an immense learning experience. I learned that it isn’t about me, but it is about us. I learned that I had to put my bias and personal feelings aside, and listen to the heartbeat of all landowners–-those who invested and those who want to invest. I learned that what I gave was directly proportional to the outcome. In the end it is all about compromise. After six years, I believe I can say that I walked the talk.
