Open Letter
to Landowners of Timberlake Ranch
Timberlake Needs You Now

A few years ago, Timberlake was in serious crisis. A group executed what was, in effect, a coup. With vote proxies collected before the annual meeting, they took over the Board of Directors and proceeded to take what a majority of landowners believed to be a series of illegal and unilateral actions to attempt to dismantle Timberlake Ranch.
After an extended battle that included pleas to the State Attorney General, numerous sessions with a court-appointed mediator, and the destruction of trust and friendships, the entire board was eventually replaced. TRNews.info was created during that time in order to provide a method of communication for the majority of landowners who had a more positive vision f or the future of this place.
We are relating this story now because that crisis occurred, in part, due to a failure of many of us landowners to remain vigilant and involved in the management of this wonderful place. We became complacent, relying on others to keep the ranch on a good course.

We are at a similar juncture today. We have had the luxury of a competent, hard-working, inclusive, and trustworthy board for years. Linda Pederson has been president for six years, during which she and her crack team performed what we thought to be impossible. They put the Ranch on a sound fiscal basis, rewrote and obtained adoption of new CC and R’s, and preserved and beautifully restored the ranch house for pennies on the dollar. But most importantly, they built this place into more of a community, in part by listening to everyone without judgment and making decisions based on the wishes of the landowners and what was best for Timberlake as a whole.

Some of those long-serving board members have left and others, including Linda Pederson, will be leaving the board at the end of their terms in May. This is the point where we all need to get involved. We cannot make the same mistake we made a few years ago, by sitting on the sidelines and assuming a new board, led by a new president, will somehow come together and function well without our participation.

If you are willing to work (and this is very much a working board), please sign up as a candidate for election to the Board of Directors and help maintain and enhance the beauty and value of this place. Both of us are past presidents of TRLA and we speak from experience when we tell you it is highly rewarding and important service. Timberlake needs you now.

PRODUCERS’ MARKET RETURNS!
The El Morro Valley Co-op and the Ramah Farmers Market will be conducting the Local Producers Market (LPM) again this fall in front of the El Morro Feed and Seed store in El Morro. The LPM will offer produce and other local products beginning Saturday October 8th from 10:00 to 11:00 am, and continuing every Saturday until Thanksgiving (maybe longer).  The LPM takes place during the “off” season when the Ramah Farmers Market isn’t open. Last spring and last year during the fall a small but determined group of local growers had a lot of fun with this, and we are looking forward to offering the service again.  Local businesses also offered discounts to customers (and producers) taking part in the LPM, making it a true cooperative effort.

            Here’s how it works:

•  In order to purchase from the LPM, go on line to www.elmorrovalleycoop.org, and click Local Producers Market (near the top of the page). Check out what’s available, and then call (or e-mail) the producer to place your order. Drive out to El Morro Feed and Seed on Saturday morning (10:00 – 11:00 am) to pick up you order and check out what else might be available. Then go have a cup of coffee.

•  Even if you haven’t placed an order customers should feel free to show up and see what’s available.

•  Any food producer or group of food producers may sell through the Exchange provided that what they sell is legal and properly handled under state and federal laws.  Producers need to contact Kirk Shoemaker (emvcoop@gmail.com or call 505-783-4824) with ad info on what they have available—preferably no later than the Thursday before the Exchange.  Kirk will post your ad info on the website   www.elmorro valleycoop.org under the Local Producers Market link.  Please include description and size of offering and price, e.g. “4 lb Hubbard Squashes, $3.00. Be sure to include contact information!

•  The producer’s ad must contain contact information so that potential buyers can contact the producer to discuss availability and means of payment.

•  All food items will be brought to the El Morro Feed and Seed at the scheduled date and time.

•  The different areas (Ramah, Timberlake, Candy Kitchen, etc.) are encouraged to pool transportation resources. Ideally, only one or two people from each area will drive in a single vehicle to the El Morro Feed and Seed, where they will pick up orders and return with them to an agreed upon distribution point for their area (Ramah, Timberlake, Candy Kitchen, etc.) On the other hand its fun to show up and join the fun. Maybe car pool.
